The Director
During his eighteen years at the University of North Dakota, Professor Leon
Osborne has been actively involved in research that applies weather information
technology to solve everyday problems. He has attracted over $20 million of
federal research dollars to the University of North Dakota through work with
such agencies as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Federal
Aviation Administration, the US Department of Agriculture, and the US Bureau
of Reclamation. Presently, he is the principal investigator of a Federal Highway
Administration Intelligent Transportation System program to demonstrate an Advanced
Transportation Weather Information System for rural America. Professor Osborne's
areas of expertise are in numerical weather prediction, synoptic/dynamic meteorology,
and the adaptation of advanced spatial technologies for public applications.
In addition to his research, Professor Osborne serves as the coordinator of the department of atmospheric sciences undergraduate degree program and instructs courses ranging from theoretical meteorology to weather forecasting. Professor Osborne and his students provide regular weather broadcasts for the Northern Great Plains on North Dakota's PBS network, Prairie Public Television.
Professor Osborne is
a native of northwest Texas where he grew-up in a small farming community.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1976 from Utah State
University and completed a Master of Science in Meteorology at the University
of Oklahoma in 1978. He is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma physics honor society
and Chi Epsilon Pi national meteorology honor society. He is also a professional
member of the American Meteorological Society and Sigma Xi. In addition to
his work at the University, Professor Osborne is a board member and a coach
of the Grand Forks Youth Football Association.
